Fried Cheese Sticks
OK – let’s be frank – Fried Mozzarella Sticks are good. Seriously, how can they taste bad when they are coated with egg, flour and seasoned bread crumbs then deep fat fried. Yummy – especially at a bar or watching the game.
Here is a Low Carb alternative. Fried Queso Blanco Cheese. This cheese can be fried to a golden brown and not melt into a puddle. Found this at Costco where they were demonstrating it and giving away a taste.
Ingredients
1/2 to 1 pound queso blanco or queso para freir cheese.
Canola oil, optional. If using a non-stick pan, oil is not needed.
Instructions
- Cut the queso blanco into squares or sticks – your choice.
- Heat the pan to medium-high (with oil if required) and sear the queso blanco.
- Turn as each side browns. Don’t worry if you don’t quite get all the edges, it’s hard to do.
- Drain on paper towels.
- Serve with your favorite taqueria type salsa for dipping. I took some Bruschette and blended it with a hot pepper seasoning. The mildly salty cheese holds up well against spicy chipotle and chili salsas, while providing a nice balance to the heat.
