Interesting Article – but these salient facts are eye opening:

The USDA standard for [food] to qualify as meat — the present standard demands it consist of at least 40 percent meat.

The remainder of the Taco Bell’s meat filling product consists of “extenders” like water, “Isolated Oat Product,” wheat oats, maltodrextrin, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent, autolyzed yeast extract, modified corn starch, sodium phosphate and silicon dioxide.

Carbs by any other name ……

When I go for fast food – I more or less expect it to be what it is advertised to be.  I have learned that the chicken in most items has been doctored up.  I never realized that the beef may not be beef.  I did check out the McDonald’s Ingredients link and was pleased to find out that the beef patty is 100% beef.   No mention of what part of the cow it came from – but that is another tale. It does state “100% pure USDA inspected beef; no fillers, no extenders.”

It would be a lot safer to just eat at home and prepare all my own food – but – that is not the way any of us live.  So we just have to keep our eyes open and learn how to read.
