Sandy is finally out of here and the Sun is shining.

We got back from a weekend away on Sunday evening.  Drove up the east coast.  The NJ Turnpike already had “State of Emergency” signage up.  Our County declared an emergency and shut down starting Monday morning, October 29th.  We made our preparations:  Got out all of the flashlights and changed the dead batteries.  Brought out all of our candles and got them set up with matches.  The counter in our kitchen is our staging area.  I went out and picked up some odds and ends.  The only “matches” available – the lighter for a BBQ – bought it.

I went on-line and bought The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet by Robb Wolf and Loren Cordain Ph.D. (Sep 14, 2010).  I accidentally downloaded it to my wife’s Kindle and not my Computer – lucky error.

We lost power at 6:25 pm just as we sat down for dinner.  Dinner by candle light – sweet.

The storm came through with a fury.  It was mainly a wind event in our area, although we got a pretty decent amount of rain.  Our basement remained dry.

Woke up to one tree down, no electric, no heat and one tank of hot water.   My office building had no electric and was locked down.  The amount of tree damage and resultant electric line downage – amazing.  We may not get electric service for another week or more.  Given other areas in New Jersey – we were lucky.

The schools are closed for the entire week.  Our kids will be going to school all summer if they have any snow days.

The positive.  I had time to read “The Paleo Solution” and will report on that in future posts.  I spent a decent amount of time cleaning out shelves and throwing out garbage – at least during daylight.  Happily, found a deck of cards in the mess – my wife and I spent the evenings playing Gin Rummy by candle light.  We even set up an exercise area and at least tried to make-believe we were exercising.   The “decorative” gas fireplace in our bedroom became our main source of heat.

My office building got electricity last night at about 8:30pm.  Today is a work day and the gym is open.  Now we have to find the time to get there.  Happily – it is our go to place for showering.

Two groups of Trick-or-Treaters came around.  This is year two of having no electricity on Halloween.  Not Fun!

Now – back to my desk.

ETA: We finally got electricity back at home on Sunday, November 4th at 1:00 p.m.
